Daniel Kubera's ski touring tips in the Grossarltal

Daniel Kuberas Skitouren-Tipps im Großarltal

Daniel loves spending time in the mountains, and is particularly fond of ski touring. Since 2020, he has been running the online magazine "Rauf und Davon", where he shares his mountain stories. For this blog post, Daniel told us about his three favourite ski tours in the Grossarltal.

"The Grossarl Valley in Salzburg is known as the Valley of Alpine Pastures in summer. And it is precisely these beautifully alpine meadows that make it a real treasure trove for ski tourers in winter. I particularly recommend these three tours to you."

Penkkopf (2.011 m)

The Penkkopf is a beginner-friendly classic at the start of the Grossarltal. It is usually accessed from Kleinarltal, which makes the ascent from Grossarltal very low frequented - and the descent, if it has snowed the previous days, is usually a powder dream! The scenery in the upper part of the tour is absolutely amazing.

Distance: 10 km | Ascent: 765 m
Difficulty: easy ski tour

Filzmooshörndl (2.189 m)

The panoramic ski tour to the Filzmooshörndl is characterised by its leisurely ascent paired with incredibly beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. It is also relatively safe from avalanches and suitable for beginners if the tracks are made properly. In short: an absolute pleasure and deservedly so one of the most popular tours in Grossarltal. The Filzmooshörndl can be perfectly combined with the Loosbühel.

Distance: 10 km | Ascent: 850 hm
Difficulty: mostly easy tour

Finsterkopf (2.152 m)

The Finsterkopf is a part of the ski touring heaven that is the Tofernalm. Many prefer to climb the better-known neighbouring mountains - above all the Gamskarkogel. And that is precisely what makes this somewhat inconspicuous elevation so interesting. While the slopes of its bigger siblings are usually pretty rutted, with a bit of luck you can still find untracked powder on the Finsterkopf (north-east exposure!).

Distance: 13 km | Ascent: 950 m
Difficulty: easy ski tour; moderately difficult descent
