If you prefer to enjoy winter away from the crowded slopes, Styria is a true paradise.
Between the Dachstein, Hochschwab, and Zirbitzkogel mountains, you'll find ski tours that will delight both beginners and experienced mountaineers.
Here are six selected ski tours that demonstrate just how diverse Styria truly is.

 

Great Mitterstein – Dachstein Glacier (Difficulty level: difficult)

Starting point: Dachstein cable car valley station / Ramsau am Dachstein
Elevation gain: approx. 1,200 meters
Duration: approx. 5–6 hours

A highlight for experienced ski tourers: The ascent via the Dachstein plateau to the Großer Mitterstein offers high alpine terrain and spectacular views as far as the Hohe Tauern.
The descent across vast snowfields is legendary. However, the tour is only recommended in stable weather conditions and with complete glacier equipment.

 

Sulzenhals – Ramsau am Dachstein (Difficulty level: medium)

Starting point: Austriahütte parking lot, Ramsau
Elevation gain: approx. 900 meters
Duration: approx. 3–4 hours

Ideal for anyone wanting to gain their first alpine experience.
The route leads across gentle slopes through mountain pine fields and offers a magnificent panorama of the Dachstein. The descent is not too steep and perfect for leisurely skiers.

Zirbitzkogel – Upper Styria (Difficulty level: medium)

Starting point: Waldheimhütte / shelter
Elevation gain: approx. 850 meters
Duration: approx. 3–4 hours

This tour is a real insider tip: expansive slopes, wide views and hardly crowded.
At the summit, a 360° view awaits, overlooking Carinthia, Styria and the Lower Tauern mountains – on a clear day, all the way to the Dachstein.

 

Hochschwab – Häuslalm route (Difficulty level: difficult)

Starting point: Seewiesen (near Aflenz)
Elevation gain: approx. 1,200 m
Duration: 5–6 hours

This challenging tour leads to the highest peak of the Hochschwab group.
The ascent requires fitness and alpine experience, but rewards you with an impressive mountain panorama and a great, long descent.

 

Brandalm – Ramsau am Dachstein (Difficulty level: easy)

Starting point: Kulmberg parking lot / Ramsau village
Elevation gain: approx. 450 m
Duration: approx. 1.5–2 hours

The ideal ski tour for beginners: From Ramsau Ort, the route leads gently uphill across wide alpine meadows to the Brandalm, where an impressive view of the Dachstein awaits you.
The descent follows the same safe route back into the valley.

 

Tonion – Mürzsteg Alps (Difficulty level: easy to moderate)

Starting point: Frein district on the Mürz (near Mürzzuschlag)
Elevation gain: approx. 700 m
Duration: approx. 2.5–3 hours

The tour to the Tonion is one of the most popular beginner tours in Upper Styria.
The ascent follows gentle terrain and offers magnificent views of the Schneealpe and Rax mountains. In good conditions, it's a safe and peaceful route to enjoy.
