Ice climbing for beginners - the ultimate winter thrill

Ice climbing is one of the most fascinating winter sports.
Sounds dangerous? It isn't – at least not if you do it right.
With the right equipment, a little courage and the right know-how, climbing the frozen waterfall becomes an unforgettable experience.
Here you'll learn what you need to know as a beginner.

What exactly is ice climbing?

Ice climbing involves climbing frozen waterfalls or icy rock faces using special crampons and ice tools.
The movements are similar to those in classic climbing – but the material underfoot is constantly in motion: ice changes with temperature, sun and wind.

The right equipment

Safety and technique in ice climbing depend heavily on the equipment.
Here's an overview of what you really need:

  • Crampons: special ice crampons with front points (e.g. Petzl Lynx, Grivel G14)
  • Ice tools (ice axes): short, curved and with a handle – for precise striking into the ice
  • Crampon-compatible mountaineering boots: stiff, insulated and waterproof
  • Helmet & harness: as with normal climbing, but with additional ice protection
  • Rope & quickdraws: static, robust and cold-resistant
  • Clothing: Layering system – breathable, windproof, water-repellent

Where you can learn ice climbing in Austria

Austria offers some of the best ice climbing spots in the Alps.

Top spots for beginners:

  1. Maltatal (Carinthia): one of the most famous ice paradises in Europe – many beginner routes, courses & rental on site.
  2. Gastein Valley (Salzburg): ideal for first attempts with mountain guides, many short waterfalls.
  3. Ötztal (Tyrol): A classic – wide ice surfaces, stable conditions and good infrastructure.
  4. Kaisertal (Tyrol): a quiet insider tip with easy ice lines and magnificent views.

Bonus: Many mountaineering schools offer ice climbing courses for beginners there – usually one to two days long, including equipment and safety training.

Safety first

Ice climbing is not a sport you can simply try on your own.
Ice can break, conditions change quickly, and experience is crucial.

📍 Important basic rules:

  • Always start with experienced guides or courses.
  • Check the weather and temperature trends (temperature increase = ice unstable!)
  • Helmets are mandatory (ice chips are dangerous)
  • Clearly agree on communication within the rope team.

Why it's worth it

Ice climbing is more than just a sport – it's a test for body, mind and trust.
You learn to stay calm, to use your strength purposefully, and to listen to nature.
And the feeling of reaching the top and looking out over the winter landscape is priceless.
